July 2025 Crypto Hacks and Scams Cost $147 Million: In July 2025, crypto platforms lost about $147 million due to hacks, scams, and security failures. Both centralized and decentralized systems were targeted, with infrastructure weaknesses and phishing attacks being major factors.
Centralized exchanges accounted for 61% of the losses. Hackers exploited smart contract bugs, supply chain issues, and server vulnerabilities. Phishing was a significant threat, with over 9,000 victims losing an average of $7 million through social engineering and malware.
Some of the biggest incidents include:
CoinDCX Exchange lost $44.2 million after hackers used a fake job offer to trick an employee into installing malware. The breach affected an internal wallet, but cold storage funds were safe. The exchange plans to cover the losses.
GMX DEX was hit by a $42 million exploit involving a reentrancy bug tied to leverage and price updates. The attacker returned about $40.5 million, and a $5 million bounty was paid to a white-hat hacker.
BigONE lost roughly $27 million when attackers compromised its hot wallet infrastructure through supply chain and server logic exploits.
WOO X suffered a $14 million phishing attack after social engineering a team member and gaining access to company devices.
ZKSwap lost about $5 million by attackers exploiting a flaw in its cross-chain bridge’s emergency withdrawal mechanism.
